Venefit Procedure For Varicose Veins Acquired By Medtronic

Venefit Procedure

The Venefit procedure, previously known as the VNUS Closure device, is the most common treatment performed in the United States for a medical condition referred to as Venous Reflux Disease. Venous reflux disease is the #1 cause of varicose veins of the legs. Varicose veins and venous reflux disease is a very common condition. Statistically, varicose veins affect approximately 40 million people in the United States or roughly 23% of the US adult population. The varicose veins can cause many complications, including blood clots, skin bleeding, wounds or ulcers of the skin, skin pigmentation or breakdown, chronic leg pain, chronic leg fatigue, or chronic leg swelling. Many patients also seek medical treatment related to cosmetic concerns related to their varicose veins.

The Venefit procedure is a revolutionary patented technology that utilizes radiofrequency sound waves to segmentally target abnormal leg veins. The treatment is often referred to as the Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation procedure. High frequency alternating electric current flowing through specialized electrodes produces heat energy that causes the abnormal varicose veins to close. The device can therefore cure patients of varicose veins and venous reflux disease. The technology is a similar concept to the use of vein lasers, but since the Venefit procedure requires less heat in order to close a defective vein, the procedure is associated with less pain, less bruising, and less post-procedure recovery time than laser treatments. This is because radiofrequency ablation delivers less thermal energy to body tissues than a typical vein laser. In addition, the procedure may be associated with a lower risk of procedure-related complications. Compared to 2 common vein lasers (i.e the 980 nm and 1470nm lasers), patients experience far less bruising and pain with the Venefit Procedure, allowing for a quicker return to normal activities.

In 2015 the medical company Medtronic has advanced its position as the world’s premier medical technology and services company by purchasing this Venefit Procedure technology. Medtronic acquired the medical company Covidien, which is the company that originally developed and distributed this device to the medical community. Medtronic is centered in Dublin Ireland and is one of the top manufacturing companies for medical devices.
