Varithena Austin – Procedure Description

Our board-certified vein physician will administer a small amount of Varithena into your varicose veins through a small needle with the use of an ultrasound the guide the therapy. The medication will slowly fill the lumen of the diseased varicose veins.  Varithena is able to be seen visually by the ultrasound machine, which assists in the accurate administration of the drug.  As the medication makes contact with the blood and the wall of the varicose veins, it will cause the varicose veins to die and collapse. The drug quickly deactivates and has not been shown to lead to harm elsewhere in the body.

Varithena Endovovenous Chemical Ablation with Foam Injection Veins

The medication is very safe when administered by a trained vein professional. It is an FDA approved medication for the treatment of varicose veins. It is currently the only mediation that is FDA approved for treatment of varicose veins of the legs. The only other alternative to Varithena for varicose vein branch tributaries is the more invasive surgical removal, referred to as phlebectomy.

Varithena – Is the Procedure Painful?

Varithena involves very little discomfort. The medication has a numbing quality as it is administered. There may be some slight stinging initially as it first goes into the vein. Most patients tolerate the procedure very well. The needles used are very small. If you have some anxiety about the procedure your doctor may prescribe valium or xanax prior to the procedure beginning.

Varithena – How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The procedure should be completed within 15 to 20 minutes in most situations. Ultrasound is utilized to accurately administer the correct quantity of Varithena as efficiently as possible into your varicose veins. A medical technician assists the physician during the procedure to make the process go as quickly and efficiently as possible.

How Many Varithena Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients require 1 or 2 varithena treatments to obtain the desired results. Our vein specialist will need to examine your leg to determine the exact number of treatments you may require. If more than one leg is affected by varicose veins then this would increase the number of treatments needed. In addition, the number of varicose veins that you have and the size of the varicose veins can also affect the number of treatments needed. Larger varicose veins and more numerous varicose veins can increase the requirement for more treatments, since only a certain amount of medication can be safely administered each session.

Is Varithena Covered by My Health Insurance?

Insurance carriers and Medicare often cover the use of Varithena, but this will ultimately depend on your particularly insurance plans as well as your vein anatomy. Varicose veins that are larger and more symptomatic are more likely to meet coverage criteria. Also, patients with a more severe type of varicose vein anatomy (referred to as saphenous vein reflux) are more likely to qualify through insurance. This can be determined by a diagnostic ultrasound of your leg veins. The ultrasound are performed at our facility. If we determine that you are a good candidate for varithena through your insurance we will always submit to your insurance company for a pre-authorization for treatment to clarify coverage before proceeding with the therapy.  We can help you obtain authorization through your insurance for Varithena Austin!

Will My Leg Pain and Swelling Resolve With Varithena Austin?

Not only will varithena improve the appearance of your legs by resolving your varicose veins, but it will also resolved leg symptoms.  Many patients with varicose veins suffer from frequent or even daily discomfort or swelling.   Symptoms are often described as achiness, dull pain, cramping, leg fatigue, burning discomfort, throbbing, restless legs, or itching,  These symptoms are typically caused by the abnormal pressure build-up inside the dysfunctional leg veins.  Once the varithena collapses the diseased veins, the pressure in the legs disappears and the leg symptoms resolve.
