Austin Vein Specialists is a varicose vein treatment center in Austin Texas that specializes in the cosmetic treatment and medical treatment of varicose veins and spider veins of the legs. Varicose veins and spider veins are diseased veins located within the legs that typically result from a genetically inherited weakness of the vein valves within the legs. Varicose veins are large bulging blue varicose veins that protrude beneath the skin, often having a serpentine or worm-like appearance to them. The reason that these veins enlarge, bulge, and protrude is due to the fact that when the valves inside the veins fail, the vein pressure builds up and stretches out the veins. As a result of the pressure buildup and engorgement, they get bigger and more numerous over time, spreading down the leg. They can even extend into the feet.

The normal function of veins is to carry blood out of the legs and towards the heart. This is accomplished by the function of one-way valves in the veins that keep blood flowing upward towards the heart. The vein valves are continuously fighting the force of gravity. Since people with varicose veins have genetically weakened valves, the valve begins to fail within the defective veins one by one. As the valve damage progresses, the blood in those diseased veins begins to travels “backward” down the leg. As this occurs the veins bulge and begins looking “varicose”.

Varicose Vein Disease

Varicose Veins of the Legs is not just a cosmetic concern. The vein disease often leads to pain, swelling, and skin damage over time. The vein disease typically gets worse and progresses in 100% of people with the disease. Over time the process begins to destroy healthy vein valves in the legs and begins to significantly harm the leg circulation. Because it is a medical disease, it is important to be evaluated and seek an expert opinion from a board-certified varicose vein specialist.

Varicose Vein Disease Progression

Our varicose vein treatment specialist, Joel Gotvald, MD, is board certified by the American Board of Vascular Surgery and has specialty fellowship training in the most modern treatment of varicose vein disease. He is able to provide the least invasive and most state-of-the-art treatments available. Some of the most common treatments for the condition are EndoVenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), radiofrequency energy vein ablation (VNUS or Venefit treatment), and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (injection of medication into the veins to cause them to close).
